Going to look at this jersey in detail.
I believe this is a 1983 retail jersey. It's a small kids size but it's a good representation on the types of supporters jerseys that were available back then. Although it's impossible to narrow it down to a specific year. From what I've looked into though there were no replicas sold at that time with sponsors and most jerseys that were sold as replicas were sold in kids sizes as it wasn't the done thing for adults to wear replicas to games. Not going to be adding this to the main site, have something similar from the same period and this is too small to fit onto the mannequin! This is made by Peerless but has the 'Junior' tag on the Peerless logo and a previous owner has added the "1" on the back. In 1983 there were a number of players who played fullback, Ron Sigsworth, Tim Barnes, Paul Morris, Greg Brown so someone was a fan of one of those. The other interesting thing is that the Jets badge has almost straight sides, unlike now that the Jets badge is almost a complete oval shape, back then it was almost a diamond shape. Have no idea why the shape changed but of the two I personally like the old shape.

Received the alternate jersey yesterday in the mail. This hasn't been used to date in a match and I believe that it's only going to be used for the trials next year.
But what an absolute stunner of a jersey! My initial thoughts were that it was the best away kits the Jets have ever had. Love the introduction of the three stripes across the waist, really frees up space on the top half of the jersey for the sponsors and badges. Can't believe that I'm saying this but the major sponsor could actually be a bit bigger in my option, it almost gets lost under the competition and the Newtown badge along with the sternum sponsor. That's only a small gripe on an outstanding jersey. This along with the home jersey that I also received will be uploaded to the site shortly once I get them properly photographed. Welcome to what I hope is a semi regular blog with ramblings about the Jets jerseys.
First off we'll be discussing the 2022 design and how it differs to the 2021 jersey which has been made by Goodfellows (GFS) for the 13th season in a row. The first point of difference is the return of the "N" badge. In 2021 the Jets badge returned to mark the 40th anniversary of the 1981 grand final. The Jets badge is retained but on the lower right hand side which is a bit meaningless. Secondly the main sponsor is now surrounded by a large white box which is a bit of an eyesore from a design point of view and makes the sponsors text very hard to see unless you're up close. There is also new collar sponsors in Philter, which actually looks pretty good. The sleeves is always a tricky area of the jersey to add in sponsors, espcially when there are two to contend with and when the stripes on the sleeves are the only real design element with the jersey. This year Deicorp has moved to the sleeves from the collar in 2021 and there is the continuing John Singleton sponsorship that has former players in place of a company name/logo and I do like that there's at least one strip that is uninterrupted around the sleeve. There's always going to be a never ending battle in terms of designing the jersey that has as many sponsors as possible as they pay the bills and reflecting the history of the jersey. In this day and age it's always going to be the sponsors who are going to win the battle and that's OK. I'd rather see a jersey with too many sponsors than no jersey being worn at Henson Park at all. |
